Mathews man dies following accident at Ward’s Corner

A Mathews man died after an accident at Ward’s Corner Friday night.

Roy Clifford Bruce, 72, of Irvinville Lane was traveling east on Route 14 in a 2001 Buick LeSabre shortly after 10 p.m. when he ran through the stop sign at the intersection with Route 198 and into a ditch, said Sgt. Scott Edelman of the Virginia State Police.

He said that Bruce was taken from the scene to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Alcohol, drugs, and excess speed were not suspected, said Edelman. In addition, the victim was properly restrained with a seat belt and the air bag deployed. The vehicle was totaled.

Edelman said that a small dog in the car survived and was taken by animal control.

This was the third traffic-related fatality in Mathews this year.
