The Mathews Little League All-Star Majors finished fourth out of 11 teams in the state softball tournament, which was held during the past week in Luray.
Mathews compiled a 3-2 record overall in the double elimination tournament.
The local girls started off the tournament on Friday morning, defeating Bennett’s Creek, 12-1. Mathews kept the winning streak going that afternoon, defeating Norton, 11-4.
On Saturday afternoon, Mathews faced its first setback, falling to Tazewell, 14-0. Facing elimination, Mathews came back strong on Sunday morning to defeat Louisa on its home field, 8-3.
The end of the tournament for Mathews came on Monday morning. Mathews battled back from an 8-2 deficit to tie the game at 8-8 against Atlee; but the Mathews girls came up just short at the end, falling 15-11.
