Mathews LL Major girls win district championship

For the second time in less than a week, a Mathews Little League softball team captured the District 15 championship and earned a state berth.
Playing at the Mathews Little League complex in Hudgins on Friday night, the Mathews All-Star Major girls defeated Richmond County in the double-elimination tournament to move on to the state tournament in Luray.
But the championship victory wasn’t an easy one for Mathews, as Richmond County put up a strong fight. Facing elimination, Richmond County edged Mathews, 3-2, forcing a second game to decide the champion.
And in that second game, it looked as if Richmond County might sweep the doubleheader and take the championship. Trailing 3-1 with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mathews girls loaded the bases. Lily Jarosz provided the winning hit, clearing the bases for a 4-3 victory. Morgan Crittenden pitched all 12 innings of both games for Mathews.
