Mathews Library to host district bee on Jan. 17

Students who have qualified for the District Level Spelling Bee, a preliminary to next spring’s Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., will take part in single-elimination competition on Jan. 17.

The district bee will be held at Mathews Memorial Library, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Local preliminaries to the national bee are sponsored by Adult Literacy on the Middle Peninsula, Inc. Program manager Rhoda-Jo Stress said the district bee “will mirror proceedings at the National Spelling Bee as each participant will take a written vocabulary and spelling test plus a two-round oral spelling test. Students who meet the competency level successfully will proceed.”

The top 10 spellers from the district bee will qualify for the Gloucester-Mathews Regional Spelling Bee that will be held on Feb. 28 at the West Mathews Civic Center in Bohannon.
