Mathews Legionnaires observe Veterans Day

Marine Col. John W. Evans, commanding officer of the Marine Corps Security Force Regiment, thanked the assembled veterans for their service, and gave a glimpse into his responsibilities and the changes taking place in his command during last Wednesday’s Veterans Day Celebration Dinner and Awards Program at American Legion Post 83, Hudgins.

Approximately 100 Legionnaires, family members and guests took part in the annual dinner, during which members are recognized for their years of continuous membership.

“I’d like to thank everyone here for your service,” Evans said, adding that two incidents recently deepened his appreciation for the sacrifice of the men and women who came before him. One was a funeral for a staff sergeant who had died in a training accident. Veterans—men who had no other connection to the staff sergeant—came out in force to honor their fallen comrade.
