Mathews legionnaires hold Veterans Day Dinner and Awards Program

American Legion Post 83 Mathews held its annual Veterans Day Dinner and Awards Program on Friday, Nov. 11, at the post home on Route 198 in Mathews.

After welcoming remarks by Commander Tim Roscher, veterans and guests enjoyed a meal prepared by Shelly Williams Catering of Mathews.

Following the meal, Legionnaire Joe Schirmer and his wife, Cathy, spoke about the “Rise as One Foundation,” which they founded while living in Connecticut. They told of establishing the foundation in order to help a 95-year-old World War II veteran who was about to lose his home and possessions due to unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances, according to a release. With the help of volunteers and sponsors, the foundation was able to correct deficiencies in the veteran’s home, and he was able to return there.

When the Schirmers moved to Mathews a few years ago, they brought the foundation with them, and they continue to assist veterans and their families in the area. Joe provides housing and shelter assistance as well as training and instruction in home repair and maintenance, while Cathy operates the Rise as One Foundation thrift store on Main Street in Mathews.

Following the presentation, Roscher and post adjutant Morey Alexander presented certificates of continuous service to those in attendance.
The evening concluded with a benediction by Post 83 Chaplain Henry Clark and the playing of “Taps” by a Post 83 bugler.
