Mathews County was not approved for a $700,000 Community Development Block Grant to help Main Street businesses with storefront upgrades and other infrastructure improvements.
County Administrator Mindy Moran told members of the Mathews Main Street Committee Monday night that Mathews was just one point away from the projects that received funding. The project will get funded, she said. "It’ll just take a little longer."
John Shaw, director of planning and zoning, said that only one project that was for business revitalization had received funding under the grant program, and it didn’t receive everything it asked for. The other projects that received funding were all for the purpose of improving areas with low to moderate income.
Shaw said that, since the Mathews project was the next on the list, there is a possibility of receiving recaptured funds from projects that were approved but for some reason are dropped. Those funds are disbursed at the end of the year, he s...
