Mathews, Lancaster split two epic contests

In what likely could be a preview for this year’s regional championship game, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team faced off twice this past week against Lancaster—with the visiting team winning both games. Last Wednesday, Mathews (11-3 overall) defeated Lancaster on the Red Devils’ home court in the last seconds of overtime, 69-67. Mathews came back from several deficits late in the game to post the win, the first time a Mathews team has defeated the Red Devils at Lancaster since 1994. On Monday, the visiting Red Devils flipped the script, edging Mathews by a free throw with 4.1 seconds remaining to beat Mathews, 46-45. Lancaster trailed for much of Monday’s game, with the Blue Devils taking a 24-18 lead into halftime.
