Mathews JV girls win two at Dream Fields

The Mathews High School junior varsity softball team came away from Lancaster’s Dream Fields complex on Saturday with two wins, beating the host Lancaster Red Devils, 20-1, and another Northern Neck foe, Northumberland, 6-1.

Lancaster and Mathews faced off in a two-and-half hour game on Saturday morning. With cold, windy and soggy weather conditions, the Lady Devils amassed nine hits and scored 20 runs to Lancaster’s one.

Ellie Armistead pitched to 21 batters striking out four, but her defense was key to holding the Red Devils to a single run. The Lady Devils had 35 at bats and batted .742 as a team. The Mathews Blue Devils will see Lancaster again this Friday at home.

Later that day, Mathews faced off against the Northumberland Indians in the second game of the tournament schedule. Mathews won, 6-1, in seven innings, with nine hits.
