Mathews Junior All-Stars capture District 15 crown

  

The Mathews Little League Junior (ages 12-14) All-Star baseball team captured the District 15 tournament championship last week. The Mathews boys went undefeated in the tournament, which was held at the Piankatank Ruritan Club’s Mathews Little League complex in Hudgins.

Coach Richard Stewart said this is the first time in at least a decade that a boys’ team from Mathews had captured the District 15 crown.

“It’s a good group of boys,” Stewart said of his team, “probably the best group of boys I’ve ever coached.”

The double-elimination tournament began on Saturday, June 25, with Mathews soundly defeating King William, 12-2. The following day, Mathews scored another one-sided win, beating Middlesex by a 16-1 margin.

On Tuesday, June 28, the team had its closest contest of the tournament, edging Lancaster, 4-3. Lancaster returned to face Mathews for the championship game last Thursday, with the Mathews boys winning this time...
