Mathews indoor track athletes advance to state meet

Mathews High School had three athletes crowned individual regional champions—Sarah Taylor, Cameron Stearns and Keith Taylor—following the Feb. 16 VHSL Class 2 Regional Indoor Track and Field Championships, which was held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex, Hampton.

Sarah Taylor finished first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10.14 seconds. For the boys, Cameron Stearns came in first in the 3,200-meter run (10:57.62) while Keith Taylor won the 500-meter dash (1:10.29). Sarah Taylor also earned a state berth in the high jump, after clearing a height of 4’6” to place second. She also came in eighth in the long jump (12’10”).

Those three will represent MHS at this week’s state championship, along with Joice Small (who took second in the girls’ shot put), and the boys’ 4x800 relay team of Gavin Dustin, Grayson Camp, Dylan White and Stearns, who came in third with a time of 10:01.7.
