Mathews harriers continue to dominate

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams maintained their regular season dominance as they competed again this past Wednesday.

The squad traveled to Washington and Lee to face five other schools—Washington and Lee, Essex, King and Queen, Northumberland and Rappahannock.  

The Mathews girls’ squad started slowly and gradually worked their up in position. Washington and Lee was the first school to have a runner cross the line, with a time of 22:39. Next came a Northumberland girl at 23:56 and then another Washington and Lee girl at 25:22. Not far behind was Jaysen Hall, of Mathews, in 25:59. Only seconds removed were MHS teammates Abbie Hudgins (26:02) and Brittany Ottarson (26:03).

The Essex number-one runner crossed the line in between Mathews runners with a time of 26:35. The Blue Devils’ next runners to finish were Avery Betz (26:49), Zoe Goodwin (29:49) and Caroline Bray (29:50). The team was rounded out by eighth grader...
