Mathews golfers defeat Middlesex

The Mathews High School golf team defeated Middlesex in last Wednesday’s 18-hole regional qualifying match, but came up short in Monday’s Region A golf tournament at the Hobbs Hole Golf Course.

Last Wednesday, Mathews defeated Middlesex by a score of 381-390. Low scorer of the match was Charger Matthew Wilson, who finished the course with an 83. Mathews was led by Cole Huff and Chase Lewis, who each finished with 93 strokes.

Zach Dehoux was next with a 97, and though he struggled on the first nine, his play improved on the back nine as he eagled on hole 6. Matt Jenkins rounded out the team score with a 98.

The win advanced the team to the regional tournament as the first seed from the Tidewater District. Seven teams attended the match—Mathews, Middlesex, Rappahannock, Lancaster, Northumberland, Essex and Windsor. Mathews finished the day with a team score of 377.
