Mathews girls win Middlesex softball tournament

The Mathews High School varsity softball team defeated Lancaster and the host Chargers last week to win the Middlesex Springtime Softball Tournament. On Monday, the Mathews girls suffered their first loss of the season, losing a tough 4-3 battle to AA opponent New Kent.

Last Thursday, the Blue Devils faced the Lancaster Red Devils in the tournament’s opening round, with Mathews winning 6-0. After a slow start, Mathews got on the scoreboard with a two-out rally in the fourth inning, as Kayla Robins walked and Kaitlin Eriksen laid down a bunt to score Robins and put herself on third base.

In the top of the seventh Mathews broke the game open, scoring four more runs to secure the win. Taylor Denton led the Devils with two hits and Sydney James, Madison Owens, Carol Bell, Hunter Thomas and Robins each had one hit. Robins also pitched an outstanding game giving up only one hit and two walks.
