Mathews girls’ tennis captures all three conference titles

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team swept the Conference 42 team, singles and doubles titles with victories last week.

Last Tuesday, Mathews defeated Middlesex to earn the Conference 42 Team Championship. In singles, number one, Morgan Johnson defeated Marisol Lujan, 6-1, 6-1. At number two, coach LaDonna Crain substituted Katherine Ransone for slightly injured Ashley Hudgins. It was senior night and Ransone is the only senior on the team. Ransone played well but lost to Grace Ruthowski, 6-1, 6-2.

Hard-hitting third seed Alexis Wells won, 6-2, 6-0, against Bryana Rios. Maddie Brown continued her undefeated winning streak by beating Savannah Rainier, 8-1. Number five Emma Wood used lots of topspin to defeat Hannah Jackson, 8-1. Number six, Madelyn Johnson, who has really stepped up to the plate since the team lost Rachel Stewart to a fractured wrist, defeated Allie West, 6-0, 6-0.
