Mathews girls score straight-set victory

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team picked up its first regular season victory on Tuesday night, crushing the Washington and Lee Eagles on the road in a 3-0 straight-set victory, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-14. The Lady Devils fought hard and had a great game together as a team.

Kristen Frank had the most aces with five, followed by Lydia Hudgins with four, Grace Bandurco and Joice Small with two each, and Lois Beale, Aleya McCurry and Connie Johnson with one apiece, leading to a total of 16 aces.

There were 11 total assists with McCurry having five, Bandurco having four, and Frank and Johnson having one each. Small contributed a total of five kills to the team effort, while McCurry had three, and Frank, Bandurco, Beale, Jada Ashberry and Meghan Pruitt each contributed one. Defensively, Johnson led the team in digs with 13. Kristen Frank (11), McCurry (nine), Bandurco (eight), Belle Frank (five), Hudgins (four), Katelynn Blake and Small each had two, while Ashberry had one dig.
