Mathews girls go 1-1 in St. Margaret’s tournament

The Mathews High School varsity softball team is 5-2 after splitting a pair of games on Saturday in a tournament hosted by St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock.

Mathews defeated Brunswick Academy, 7-2, in the opener, then lost an eight-inning heartbreaker to Greenbrier Christian Academy, 7-6.

Against Brunswick, MHS struck first scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning when Ellie Armistead reached base on a hard ground ball single, Caroline Crittenden reached on an error, and Keely Crittenden drove them both in with a single to left field. Brunswick evened the score in the top of the fourth, crossing the plate on a walk and two singles.

MHS took control of things in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back singles by Emily Sorey, Josey Bauby and Victoria Bing. These brought a third Devil run across the plate.
