Mathews girls gear up for district title contest

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team got ready for its upcoming Tidewater District showdown against Middlesex with a pair of easy victories over the past week against Charles City and West Point.

Mathews will host the Chargers tonight, with the Tidewater District title on the line. The Devils beat Middlesex earlier in the season. Tonight’s varsity game will start at approximately 7:30 p.m., immediately after the 6 o’clock jayvee contest.

Last Thursday, Mathews had no trouble against Charles City, crushing the visiting Panthers, 53-13. Mathews dominated the game from the opening tipoff, jumping out to an 18-2 first-quarter lead.

Angela Sale led Mathews in scoring with 10 points, followed by Taylor Denton with nine and Sydney Morgan with eight. Others contributing points were Lindsey Brown (five), Samera Thomas, Megan Zeller, Hannah Rowe and Mackenzie Moughon (four points each), Whitney Eriksen (three points) and Shelby Ware (two).
