The Lady Devils have earned a return trip to VCU.

Following state tournament wins during the past week over Rappahannock County and Altavista, the Mathews High School volleyball team—last year’s state runner-up—will play at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Siegel Center in Richmond with the state championship on the line.

The girls had a bit of a scare at the start of Saturday’s state quarterfinal game when Rappahannock County, the defending state champions, won the first set against a stunned Lady Devil squad. But after that opening game loss, Mathews was perfect, winning the next three against the Panthers and shutting out the Altavista Colonels, 3-0.

Mathews will face the winner of last night’s other state semifinal game, either the Region C champion Narrows Green Wave or the Region D champion Chilhowie Warriors.
