Mathews girls defeat Chargers, 47-44

In its only contest last week, the Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated the visiting Middlesex Chargers last Wednesday, 47-44. Monday’s game with Lancaster and Tuesday’s against Northumberland were not played, due to snow.

Although the Lady Devils did not dominate the night, they did lead for most of last Wednesday’s game. The contest was a relatively close one until midway through the fourth quarter when Mathews surged into a double-digit lead. However, Mathews was not able to successfully maintain possession of the ball and eat the clock. In the final three minutes, Middlesex cut that double-digit lead into three. 

The Chargers fell just short as they were able to get off a three-point shot in the final seconds that would have tied the game. Hallie Duncan led the Devils in scoring with 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half. Ellie Armistead followed with 16 points, Harley Haydon with seven, and Yolanda Fells and Madison So...
