Mathews girls compile perfect score in cross country meet

The Mathews High School boys and girls cross country teams competed in their final regular season race last Wednesday at Beaverdam Park. The Mathews girls took first place with a perfect team score of 15, while the boys placed second to West Point.

It was an unusually warm afternoon, and two teams, Lancaster and West Point, joined Mathews for the race. The girls went first.

Rileigh Betz (23:07) was first on the team and first overall. She was followed by Ellie Gale (23:08), Skylar Lewis (23:34), Avery Betz (23:50), Reilly Price (23:55), Lizzie Stokes (24:12) and Alyssa Curko (26:08). Abigail Hudgins (24:51) would have been seventh on the team, but her scores could not count because she is in eighth grade. The rest of the girls’ team—Kamryn Blake (26:31), Tiffany Condron (27:41) and Caroline Evans (28:39)—all performed well. West Point came in second place with 57 points, and Lancaster in third with 64 points.
