The Mathews Visitor and Information Center partnered with a few local businesses last fall to host a contest, with the prize a free getaway to Mathews. The promotion was done in partnership with Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine and featured a two-night stay at The Inn at Tabbs Creek, a gift certificate from Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill, a class at the Bay School Community Arts Center, dinner for two at White Dog Bistro, and a gift basket of souvenirs from the visitor’s center. The winner, drawn at random by the magazine, was Deacon Maccubin, at right, of Northern Virginia, who visited his grandparents in Mathews as a child. He will be taking advantage of his prize this month, visiting Mathews with his husband and partner of 44 years, Jim Bennet, at left.
