Mathews football teams fall to Lancaster

The visiting Lancaster Red Devils dominated their Blue Devil counterparts in Friday’s varsity football matchup, as Mathews fell to its Northern Neck opponents, 33-6.

With the loss, Mathews falls to 1-2 on the season; Lancaster, meanwhile, improved to 2-0.

The only Mathews scoring came late in the game, as sophomore Elijah Willis had an 83-yard kick return for a touchdown. Willis also had 45 receiving yards from passes thrown by Thurman Hudgins and Reggie Johnson.

The junior varsity Blue Devils also lost to the Red Devils last week, with Lancaster shutting out Mathews last Wednesday, 58-0.

This week, the Blue Devils’ opponent will be the Northumberland Indians. The JV squad was scheduled to host Northumberland last night. The varsity team travels to Heathsville on Friday to face the Indians in a 7 p.m. contest. ...
