Mathews fireworks show to be held July 7

Mathews County will hold its Independence Day fireworks display on Saturday, July 7 at Mathews High School, the members of the Mathews Fireworks Committee decided at a meeting on April 20 at Mathews Memorial Library.

The committee has also reserved the following evening, Sunday, July 8, as a rain date. The event will include music and refreshments. The fireworks show is expected to begin around 9-9:15 p.m., committee member Charles Ingram said.

A section of Route 14/198 directly in front of Mathews High School will be closed immediately before and during the fireworks display. Additionally, the picnic area/playground near the baseball field will be closed in the afternoon and evening of the fireworks show.
Ingram pointed out that his grandson, Jeremy Elliott, who is employed by the Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division, Indian Head, Md., is certified to handle explosives in Virginia and will be supervising the fireworks display.
