Mathews family has run-in with rabid feral cat

Chuck and Murphy Heasley of Mathews went through an ordeal recently. Both of them were attacked by a rabid cat on the deck of their home in the Glebe and had to receive a series of injections to ensure they didn’t contract the disease, as well.
Chuck said the family dog Eevee was in the house on the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 9, when she started barking uncontrollably at a cat in the backyard. Strangely, the cat didn’t run off as the feral cats in the neighborhood usually do, he said. He put Eevee in her crate because he didn’t want her to attack the cat, and he went out on the deck and sat down to watch the creature.
The solid grey cat looked to be an older kitten, not quite full grown, said Chuck, and, although it wasn’t foaming at the mouth, it was making raspy-sounding meows and was thin and appeared to be in distress. It sat in the yard, watching him instead of running away, and he called Mathews Animal Control to let them know there was a cat that probably needed veterinary care...
