Mathews defeats Warhill, 9-0

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team picked up another impressive win against a larger school last Tuesday, defeating Group 3A Warhill, 9-0.

In top-seed singles, Lady Devil Morgan Johnson kept the ball in play against hard hitting Sasha Strakhova, beating her 8-4. Ashley Hudgins, second in the lineup, won against Katie Braddom, 8-3, by strategically placing the ball on the court.

Competing at number three, Rachel Stewart earned her tough victory of 8-6 over Ellie Busher. Fourth seed Alexis Wells went up against Olivia Dannon and won, 8-3, using lots of deep topspin shots. Number five in the lineup, Maddie Brown, a sophomore who has been undefeated this year in singles, played tough to beat Ashlee Karlach, 8-1. Emma Wood, playing number six, dominated Autumn Liu, 8-1.
