The Mathews County Woman’s Club hosted a luncheon and fundraiser Saturday at Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church to benefit the Mathews County High School Music Department in honor of 16-year-old harpist Aiden Sowers, above. The luncheon was catered by Shirley Williams, then Sowers performed for the assembled crowd. Sowers intends to do some schooling overseas after he graduates from MHS. On Monday, the club welcomed guest speaker Leslie Jingluski, below, from the Avalon Center, who spoke about the history of the center and how it serves the area by renting safe houses for people who are living in violent domestic situations. The Avalon Center also talks to high school students about healthy relationships, and how to avoid dating violence as well as social media “mistakes.”
