Mathews community comes together to help neighbor in need

The Mathews community is once again coming together to support a neighbor in need.

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Mathews High School to help pay for medical expenses for Tammy Rife of Gwynn’s Island, who is recovering from one brain surgery and expects to have another tumor removed in June.

Tammy was shocked recently when she learned after a trip to the emergency room that the sudden onset of hand numbness she was experiencing was being caused by three benign brain tumors, or acute meningioma. She said she hadn’t had headaches or any other symptoms besides a sudden loss of sensation in her right hand that quickly extended up her arm.

“My hand felt like rubber,” she said, “and my whole arm became nonfunctional.”
