Mathews ceremony to honor 2 Revolutionary War Patriots

A grave-marking ceremony for two Patriots of the American Revolution will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3 at the Williams Family Cemetery in Mathews. The public is invited.

The Richard Henry Lee and the Thomas Nelson Jr. chapters of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution will conduct the ceremony at the graves of Samuel Williams (1725-1789) and John Richards (?-1806). “Both these Patriots gave substantial aid to the cause,” according to a release from the Richard Henry Lee chapter.

The ceremony is sanctioned by the National Sons of the American Revolution and grave markings are held in all 50 states, as well as many foreign locations.

“The purpose for the ceremony is one of the many ways NSSAR seeks to remember the founders of our nation to include all Patriots who fought in the Revolution or provided support for the cause,” the release stated.
