Mathews celebrates National Farmers’ Market Week Saturday

Mathews Farmers’ Market is celebrating National Farmers Market Week with a variety of activities from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

A special performance from 10 a.m. to noon by the local band “Three Creeks Down,” a folk, country, soft rock, and jazz trio, will be a highlight of the celebration. The band is composed of Hunter Owens on guitar, bass and vocals; his brother Hayden on bass and drums; and Tristan Barnes on bass and piano.

Not only will this week’s market provide entertainment and an opportunity for Mathews residents and visitors to purchase products from an abundance of vendors, said a press release, but it will also offer activities for young and old to enjoy, including vendor demonstrations on how they make their wares and inflatables for children.

To make the celebration a truly community event, said the release, village restaurateurs will participate by offering menu specialties or other inviting means for recognizing National Farmers’ Market Week.

“Their participation will allow residents and visitors to the county to shop at the market and then enjoy a delightful lunch at one of our fine downtown eateries,” said the release.

Participating restaurants include Richardson’s Café, Southwind Pizza, Mathews Grill & Deli and Mi Casa Azteca.

National Farmers Market Week, being celebrated this year from Aug. 3-9, highlights the vital role farmers’ markets play in the community, said the release. Over the past 20 years, the Mathews Farmers’ Market, sponsored by the Mathews Main Street Committee, has proven an abundant source of food, connection, and resilience in the Mathews community.

“It has created a space where market operators, not only farmers but craftsmen, collaborate to meet the evolving needs of the community,” said the release.
