Mathews BZA to hear Bavon variance request

The Mathews Board of Zoning Appeals will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courtroom on Court Street to consider one application for a zoning variance.

Larry W. and Stephen M. Pemberton of Wilson, Va., have requested a variance to reduce all setback requirements in order to replace an existing mobile home with a 1,400-square-foot family dwelling at 447 Bavon Beach Drive.

The request is to reduce the front yard setback from 50 feet to 45 feet, both side yards from 20 feet to nine feet, and the rear yard from 50 feet to 43 feet.

According to the staff report, the lot is only 8,019 square feet, but it was created before a zoning ordinance was adopted and is, therefore, grandfathered. The mobile home is situated almost entirely in the Resource Protection Area, but the proposed home would be outside of the RPA except for part of a 12’ x 24’ deck.

Planning staff has recommended approval of the variance request.
