Mathews budget hearing to be held next Thursday

A public hearing on Mathews County’s proposed $23.66 million 2012-2013 budget will be held at 7 p.m. next Thursday, April 19, in the historic courthouse.

The budget proposal includes 3 percent raises for county workers and school personnel and full funding of the school board’s $12.4 million budget request, but no increase in real estate taxes and a 5 percent decrease in personal property taxes.

Some highlights include decreases in expenses because of savings in jail costs, waste management and personnel; and an increase in revenues because of collections, federal funding for grants, and VRS contributions by employees.

The proposed budget is available online in its entirety at www.co.mathews.va.us.
