Mathews broadband projects nearing completion

The Mathews Broadband Advisory Board held its regular monthly meeting in person at Mathews Memorial Library and online via Zoom on Dec. 12.

Chair Judy Rowe gave an update on the two Virginia Telecommunications Initiative (VATI) grant-funded projects now under construction in the county. She said that Breezeline expects to be finished with construction by the end of January, while Open Broadband has been given an extension to later in 2023.

Once both projects are completed, she said, a total of 642 households in Mathews will have broadband available for rates as low as $49 a month. Door tags and flyers are currently being distributed by the two companies to households that are in the new service areas, she said.

Rowe said that some people in Mathews don’t know that their homes are on the lists of addresses that are in the new service areas. She suggested that people visit mathewscountyva.gov and scroll down on the home page to check the address lists. The list for Breezeline’s...
