Mathews board to seek recommendation on Lee-Jackson gymnasium roof

Mathews supervisors decided last week to seek a qualified engineering firm to inspect the damage to the Lee-Jackson Elementary School gymnasium roof and make a recommendation on whether the structure should be repaired or replaced.

Damage to the gym roof structure was discovered in January, following a winter storm that had caused the roof of Donk’s Theater to collapse.

School Superintendent Nancy Welch told the board during its monthly meeting that an engineering firm had done an initial inspection in order to determine what the problem was and had found that the gussets that were supporting the roof trusses had failed. The engineer estimated that the cost to replace the roof would be around $500,000, said Welch, while the cost to pull back the shingles and underlayment and repair the trusses would be around $250,000.
