Mathews board opts not to establish waterways committee

On a split vote Tuesday night, Mathews supervisors decided against approving a draft resolution that would have established an official Mathews Waterways Advisory Committee.

Supervisors Amy Dubois and Edwina Casey moved and seconded the motion, respectively, but it was not supported by board chair Charles Ingram, vice chair G.C. Morrow or member Pepper Love.

A citizens’ waterways advisory committee has been meeting for several months under the leadership of Hudgins resident Mike Walls, who ran for the board of supervisors on a campaign that focused on addressing aids to navigation and dredging issues in the county.

During discussion of the matter, Casey questioned whether there would be “actual names” of people on the committee or if people “are just showing up.” Dubois explained that adopting the resolution would formalize the committee.
