Mathews board considers policy for funding of Constitutional officers

Mathews County Administrator Steve Whiteway suggested to the county’s supervisors last week that they consider some changes to the county’s budget and finance policy.

He said in a white paper presented during the board’s Nov. 16 meeting that the policies would address issues regarding funding for Constitutional offices and the management of county positions.

Explaining that the county provides Constitutional officers with more money for salaries than is required by law, Whiteway said the board should look at options for controlling expenses and saving money as personnel changes are made. Three Constitutional officers lost their seats in the recent election and will be replaced in January.
