Mathews board considers adding on debt

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors heard two presentations on financial matters during its meeting last Thursday, including a suggestion that the county take out a loan that would require a real estate tax increase of 2.5 cents per $100 of assessed value. Supervisors also heard some potentially good news regarding the septic system at Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill, a county-owned property. Financial presentations Robinson Farmer Cox Associates CPA Taylor Stover presented the board with the county’s final financial audit for the 2025 fiscal year. He said the county received an “unmodified opinion” in all areas covered in the audit, which is the highest rating possible. Davenport and Company representative Kyle Laux took the board through a review of the county’s upcoming financing needs and options, focusing largely on the 2024 issuance of a $5 million lease revenue bond anticipation note to pay for existing capital needs, as well as the need to pay for approximately $7 million...
