Mathews board begins search process for superintendent

Mathews County School Board members approved a tentative timeline in its search for a new superintendent, as well as a position vacancy announcement, during a special meeting held Tuesday afternoon in the school board office conference room.

The application period for a replacement for retiring Superintendent of Schools Nancy Welch will open Tuesday, Feb. 21, with the deadline for applying for the job by 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 9.

The school board plans to conduct interviews with applicants the week of March 27-31, with announcement of a new superintendent as soon as the board’s April 18 meeting. If the board has not come to an agreement with a candidate by that time, the new superintendent will be announced at its May 16 meeting.

Tuesday’s special meeting was held at 4 p.m., prior to a 6 p.m. scheduled joint work session with county supervisors on the division’s proposed 2023-2024 budget, which was held in the Mathews High School media center (see related story).Assistant ...
