Mathews blood drive nets 65 units

Last week’s bloodmobile in Mathews resulted in the collection of 65 units, according to American Red Cross volunteer Nan Cross.

The drive, which was sponsored by American Legion Post 83 and the Mathews County Woman’s Club, was held on Dec. 7 at the Piankatank Ruritan Club building in Hudgins.

A total of 68 potential donors participated. There were five deferrals, as well as two double-red donations. There were two first-time donors—Vi Bazzell and Kim Canady—as well as three giving for the first time at a Mathews drive—Donald Jaeger, Ronald Miller and Roger Walton. Gallon pins were awarded to James Lassiter and Heather Sterns (one gallon), Derek Dequaine (two gallons), Elizabeth Clemmons (three gallons) and Cecil Dougherty (four gallons).

The next community blood drive in Mathews will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022.
