Mathews blood drive exceeds goal

The Mathews community blood drive, held on Feb. 2 at the Piankatank Ruritan Club building in Hudgins, exceeded its 63-unit goal, with 66 units collected, according to Red Cross volunteer Nan Cross.

A total of 67 potential donors attended the drive. Five were deferred for various medical reasons while five others gave double red donations. One donor was unable to give a complete donation.

There were two first-time donors at the drive—Coles Buchanan Jr. and Patricia Hall. Two others—Gail Ziemba and John Snow—gave for the first time at a Mathews drive. Snow also received a two-gallon pin.

Other gallon pins were awarded to Bethany Zoll (one gallon), Patricia Gwaltney (four gallons) and Guy Kemp (27 gallons).
