The annual Mathews Christmas Audubon Bird Count is scheduled for Sunday, with the count starting before light and most sectors remaining as usual.
According to coordinator Joyce McKelvey, a few new additional participants may be added to sectors that can handle more coverage. She said those who missed last year but have a regular route and sector year after year, will be assigned as before.
McKelvey said she has updated and accurate sector maps available that were obtained from the 1969 archives. “This will help on public access points and to prevent trespassing issues as many long-time private properties that welcomed access have changed hands,” she said.
McKelvey said there is a need for younger people to take up where others are not able. “We are still a closed count but do want to add participants as sectors find a need,” McKelvey said.
