Mathews B&G Club members recognize mentors

January was national mentoring month, prompting six members of the Mathews Boys and Girls Club to present thank you cards to their mentors.

The club offers a mentoring program for members ages 6-18, said a press release. Mentors are either program staff or volunteers from within the community. They help members with school work and with problems in general. The mentors and members also do activities together at the club, such as playing pool or shooting hoops.

"I really enjoy being around my mentor because he helps me with my homework and then we get to play pool or bumper pool," club member Tyrese Brooks said.

The program is in its second year and is getting better every day, said the release.

"I like being a mentor because it is my chance to be a positive role model to the youth I mentor, and I like seeing them reach their goals," said staff member and mentor Lamont Johnson.
