Mathews beats New Kent, Grafton, now 11-0

The Mathews High School tennis team added victories over two Peninsula schools last week, shutting out New Kent, 9-0, and soundly defeating Grafton, 7-2. With the wins, the Lady Devils are a perfect 11-0 in team play.

Mathews traveled to New Kent last Wednesday to face the 2A Trojans. Playing number one, Morgan Johnson had the longest match of the day against Kaitlyn Clayton, due to the consistency of both players. However, Johnson put up a tough fight to earn an 8-5 win. At number two, Ashley Hudgins used smart, steady shots to beat Kindrea, Grey 8-3.

Third seed Rachel Stewart won 8-0 against Dominique Palermo using strong serves and deep shots to throw her opponent off. At number four, Maddie Brown also won, 8-0, beating Keshyra Jadooram by using lots of backhand slice shots. At number five, Emma Wood breezed through her match, 8-2, against Torun Carlson. Madelyn Johnson, the sixth-seeded Lady Devil, brought home the final singles victory defeating Tiffany Tolley, 8-1.
