The Mathews High School girls’ indoor track team placed 20th overall, while the boys came in 21st, in last week’s VHSL Class 1/2 Indoor Track and Field Championships held at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
Sarah Taylor was the top finisher among the Blue Devils, coming in third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10:43 seconds. She also came in sixth in the high jump (4’10”) and was a member of the 1,600-meter relay team that came in eighth (5:22.4). Other members of that squad were Zoe Goodwin, Zoe Camp and Melody Smith.
Senior Victoria Palaimo ended up tied for seventh place in the high jump with a leap of 4’4”. Overall, the Lady Devils accumulated 11 team points.
On the boys’ side, Cameron Stearns placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:40.91. Stearns, Brian Robinson, Dylan White and Grayson Camp were members of the team’s 3,200-meter relay that finished sixth overall, crossing the finish line in 9:30.7. Those finishes earned Mathews eight team points....
