With their backs against the wall, the Mathews Little League Senior All-Star baseball team showed resilience on Friday night, winning back-to-back games over Caroline County to take the District 15 tournament and earn a spot in the Virginia State Tournament, which begins today. Mathews went 4-1 in the district tournament, which was hosted by the Mathews All-Stars at the Piankatank Ruritan Club field in Hudgins. After crushing Middlesex, 11-1, in the June 27 opener, Mathews faced Caroline for the first of three times on June 28, falling to Caroline, 13-10, and sending Mathews down into the elimination bracket. The Mathews boys didn’t give up, beating Spotsylvania, 13-2, on July 2 to earn the right to face off with Caroline again, which only had to win one game in the double-elimination tournament.
