Mathews 2-1 in softball action

 

The Mathews High School varsity softball team picked up a pair of wins and dropped one game during the past week to bring the Lady Devils’ season record to 9-2; 2-0 in Conference 42 play.

MHS easily defeated the Charles City Lions last Thursday, 21-0. Madison South pitched the complete game shutout allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out 10 batters. Mathews totaled 18 hits throughout the game, batting .581 as a team.

On Monday, the Devils traveled to Warhill to suffer their second loss of the season to the 3A Lions, 5-2.

Mathews struck first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Caroline Crittenden drew a walk. Savanna Wooten laid down a sacrifice bunt. Crittenden went from first to third on the play and was able to score on a throwing error as the Lions attempted to get her out at third.

Mathews experienced some trouble of its own, however, in the bottom of the third inning. The leadoff batter walked and the next batter reached on a fielding...
