MARY LINDA SMITH BALDWIN

Mary Linda Smith Baldwin, 70, of Gloucester, Virginia, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, after a short illness.

She was a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, raised in Newport News, and a Gloucester resident for the last 40 years.

In 1976, Linda and her young family moved to Gloucester where she and her husband worked as real estate agents. She was a member of Abingdon Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry committee. She was an active supporter of her local Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society and a member of the Ware River Circle of The King’s Daughters. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  

Survivors include her son, Robert Maxwell Baldwin III and his wife Anna of Bermuda Run, North Carolina; two daughters, Kimberly Baldwin Robins and her husband Jason of Gloucester, and Kelly Baldwin Williams and her husband Brian of Gloucester; her sister, Carolyn Smith Abbitt of Newport News; her brother, Dr. James Sidney Smith and his wife Alice of Cuba, Alabama; seven grandchildren, Anna, Tess, Gwen, and Leah Robins, Savannah and Scott Williams, all of Gloucester, and Max Baldwin of Bermuda Run. She is also survived by three nephews, Matthew Abbitt, Stephen Abbitt, and Sidney Smith Jr.; three nieces, Laura Abbitt, Joanna Heath, and Ashley Roe. Linda is also survived by Richard A. Mellar, her former husband, of Gloucester, and lifelong friends, Janet H. Parker of Gloucester, and Stuart L. Leigh of Dumfries, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, M. Gardner Smith Sr. and Ruby C. Smith, a brother, M. Gardner Smith Jr., and her niece, Margaret Ann Webb Abbitt.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Abingdon Episcopal Church, Gloucester. Visitation will follow the service in the church parish hall. Burial will be private.
