Mary Johnson Smoot, age 98, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 26, 2025. She was born on November 12, 1926, in Branchville, Virginia, and raised in Richmond. She moved to Gloucester in 1958 with her husband, Philip, and three girls. Mary worked for Crestor Bank and then retired to Lake Gaston, North Carolina. She and Phil enjoyed going on boat rides, square dancing, road trips on their Gold Wing motorcycle, and traveling both home and abroad. They spent many winters in Arizona, Florida, and Texas. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Philip; her daughter, Marlene Brummer, and her granddaughter, Ginger Ryanne Marshall. She is survived by her daughters, Ginger Moyer (Ron), Suzanne Riley (Wayne), and son-in-law Bert Brummer; grandchildren, Holly Marshall, Chris Riley (Stacey), Andy Riley (Beth), and Jessie Moyer (Edwina), and great-grandchildren, Nate, Margo, Sydney, and Elinia Grace. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Mary’s caregivers, Deedee, Centra, and Michelle. It was a blessing to have your help and to know that she was being cared for and loved. The graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Gregg Hand Sr. at Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 2 p.m. In memory of Mary, contributions may be made to Pleasant Hill Christian Church, Box 550, Gasburg, Va., 23857.
