MARY HILLIARD SIMPSON

Mary Hilliard Simpson, 83, of Henrico and Mathews, Virginia, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020. She is now reunited with her husband of 58 years, Leonard H. “Buddy” Simpson III. Mary was born in Henrico County on Sept. 30, 1936 to Hugh and Augusta Hilliard.

She is survived by her son, Leonard H. Simpson IV (Laura); her daughter, Louise Heaton (Charles); her grandchildren, L. Harrison V, Robert Simpson, Charles V “Quint” and Anna Heaton. She is also survived by her brother, Hugh Hilliard.
Mary grew up in Henrico County. She attended Hermitage High School and later Richmond Professional Institute. She met and married the love of her life, Buddy, and left her studies to become a devoted wife and mother. Once her children were older, she returned to the workforce in Richmond, but always her true passion was her four perfect grandchildren.

In 2003, after Hurricane Isabel, Mary took on the work of restoring her beloved father-in-law’s family property in Mathews. Mary and Buddy loved the Mathews community and she made it her full-time home after her husband’s passing.

Funeral services will be held at Fanneys Point, 349 Lillies Lane in Hudgins, on October 3, 2020. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., with services at 10:30. Burial will follow at Christ Church Cemetery in Mathews. There will be a reception after the burial at Mathews Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mathews YMCA, 33 Cricket Hill Road, Hudgins, Va. 23076 or to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 723, Mathews, Va. 23109. Please be advised that social distancing will be observed. Staff will be wearing masks.
