MARY CATHRYN WARD DRUMMOND

Cathryn “Cassie” Drummond, 79, of Hudgins, passed into glory on Dec. 2, 2017 surrounded by loving family.

A Gwynn’s Island native, Cathryn was born on “the Island” Nov. 1, 1938 to Charles Earl and Virginia Isabel Ward.

A graduate of Mathews High School, she began her career as a secretary at the YMCA in Richmond, eventually attaining a position as a salary administrator at BASF Chemical (formerly Dow Badische) in Williamsburg, before leaving that position around 1980 to begin a second career as a full-time mother and homemaker.

Cathryn loved the Lord and expressed it constantly in her kindness, care, and attention to everyone she met.

In service to her community she volunteered for the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad for many years, first as an EVOC and then as an EMT-B, and was recognized as Squad Person of the Year in 2000. She also served postings on the Mathews Memorial Library Board of Directors and as Treasurer of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member, served on the Membership Committee, and sang in the choir.

For a time she also worked as a housepainter with her sister Judy and friend Lindy Hatch, and volunteered as a tax preparer for AARP.

Along with God, her family, and cherished friends, Cathryn loved fishing and cruising the Chesapeake Bay, especially at the helm of her deadrise workboat Seagull.

Cathryn was a prolific reader and a dedicated bird watcher, and especially loved hummingbirds. Other pastimes included rooting for the Washington Redskins football team and adding to her prodigious collection of sharks’ teeth and marine fossils.

Cathryn was preceded in death by her mother and father; sisters, Virginia “Dinnie” Ward and Judy Godsey Ward; brother, Charles Russell Ward, and stepson, Edward Drummond.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, James W. Drummond Sr. and their son, John G. Drummond (Andrea); son, Ronald “Bud” Ward of Grimstead; stepsons, James Drummond Jr. (Joy) and Charlie Drummond; grandchildren, Kara Royall (Hunter), Timothy Drummond (Victoria), Ryan Ward, Alan Ward, Warner Ward, and Rebekah Judy Drummond; great-grandchildren, Fiona Drummond, Libby Drummond, Samuel Drummond, and Rylee Ward Foster, and a host of dear relatives and cherished friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, 2011 Old Ferry Road, Gwynn, Virginia 23066.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Hudgins, Va. 23076.

“Bait up one more time, Captain Mama!”
